Germany Tour, July 2009 - Mercedes Benz and The New Porsche Museum
23 September 2009
No trip to Germany could be without a visit to the city of Stuttgart, home of Mercedes Benz and Porsche amongst others. Porsche had just opened its new museum. An amazing modern designed building right next to the factory which resembled an art gallery more than a museum, with all the cars beautifully displayed in a variety of creative ways.
Being a massive Porsche fan I was in heaven, running through the variety of racing exhibits which culminated in the 917 display. Both Chris and I just sat there in awe for about half an hour to take in these magnificent racing beasts.
The attention to detail and precision with the way the museum works is very German and befits Porsche. A great way to spend a few hours of the day.
From there we ran across town to the other “must see” building of Mercedes Benz - another award winning construction that houses a huge amount of history. This is my second visit and Chris’s first, but still we were there for 6 hours and ran out of time near the end of the tour.
They must put something in the air-con as after spending a day there you cannot think anything but Mercedes Benz builds the greatest cars in the world!
My Highlight of the tour: Seeing the Porsche 917 display. 1000+ bhp monsters that changed the racing world. Such a beautiful car.
My Favourite car of the tours: Again so difficult, but in the Benz Museum sits the 300SLR #722. It is an all time favourite of mine. This is the car Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the 1955 Mille Miglia within record time. 310bhp, straight 8 cylinders... heaven...
